Another 2 days and ......it will be 2 months I been in this project....
My PM here is good...and I like the environment as well...the only drawback here..is my team member....sigh.....sometimes..I feel additional stress to work with him.....
WHY? Simply because I am like his Mama....Can you imagine...."A MAMA taking care of a 38 year kid"????..My Goodness....worse than taking care of a baby.....
Well...the story start like this...I have a 38 yrs old guy developer.....Hmm...I must compliment him ..that he has quite a good technical background.....However, a developer is not just a person doing coding and nothing else......
I guess normal things like time management, updating status, basic writing email skill, phrasing sentences and checking data output from the written source code......is also a MUST KNOW....in the working society....
Morever, he has been working in this quite famous consulting firm for a few years...and he always like to tell me...."HOW SOUGHT AFTER" he is...and people from different project is fighting for him...to join their project....etc....and the complimenting of himself goes on....
Well..initally...I thought so...but now...I start to take what he says with a pinch of salt....
It all begins when...he is first suppose to submit his first deliverable....on XXXX day....well..he comes late....take long lunch break..and sometimes...disappear...in the middle of the day...for tea break...so I guess....he must have ample time...to do his things...and had planned his time well..to complete his task on time...
For me, I don't really try to constrain a person working time as long as the person is able to deliver.....
But now I seriously....got to keep a close watch on this person....Mr XXXX
The day when he is suppose to give me his deliverables, he didn't complete his work...and didn't bother to update me his status.....nor didnt preampt me that he is unable to deliver his work....
Of course I was unhappy as I will not be able to answer to my PM....
I had learn a lesson and ...Subsquently, I begin to check on him..every single day....on his status keeping a close watch just like a watch dog....Can you imagine how tired I feel...having to do this on a 38 yrs old guy???
The funniest thing is....I have created a issue log for our project...and send him email related to him on the project...he actually did not bother to read the issue log, email, related documents on the project...I got a shock of my life when I found out....How could such a experienced person...who have work so many years to display this kind of "DON'T CARE" attitude....
Well....as usual, when I ask him...he goes round and round...telling long story and giving all sort of excuses..to cover up for his mistake....after 2 months...I am more or less immune to his excuses....
Guess wat...10 times...out of times ..the work he deliver has got error or the data is inaccurate or wrong etc.....
Nowadays, I have to take extra effort and detail to check his work....Isn't that worse than checking my own work.....
To make matter worst.....whenever I explain to him some stuff, he will nod his head says he understand....few days later, when he deliver his stuff...."ACTUALLY HE DON'T UNDERSTAND" because the logic that was suppose to incoporate in his code is wrong..*faint*..
Then I realise he don't understand...
The strangest thing is ...Whenever I ask him to change something..before sending out the output to my PM or user, he will send out without changing...*fuming* ....."Am I talking to a tree or wall?? When I question him, he will say he forgot.....First few times....I still can tolerate....and I told him..since he is forgetful, then do something about it.
Like taking notes down on what is needed to be done...Guess what is his reply? "Aiyah..too troublesome"....goodness gracious....Is that the attitude that a MNC professional like him should display.....*VOMIT BLOOD*
Finally I have a 30 mins talk with him.....during the 30mins talk, I told him my expectations...his mistakes.. the standards in his deliverables.....etc...
Throughout the whole conversation and the 2 months of working with him, he will always comes out with all kinds of excuses for his mistake that I have point out..not even a "SORRY" or acknowlegement of his mistake....But jsut keep telling me "Aiyah sometimes a lot of things to do and change then forgot lor"......Crap....if it happens so many times...."DON'T YOU THINK YOU SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT"??? Isn' that what a normal person will even do???
To be frank, I guess..in this world..everyone make mistakes...Most importantly is you must learn from mistake, admit you are wrong and try to change for the better....
Instead of that ....he displays a nonchalant attitude....that is what pisses me off.....Just like he feels....I am singing....."LALALALA".....
Well other than that, he is quite ok la....at least he is not scheming or political kind....same like me...just say what you feel....
Guess what nowadays when i ask him to do something, I actually have to send a summary note...to remind him on what needs to be done instead of he doing that himself....Don't you think that I am like a MOTHER now???
Well..I hope....is going to be over soon...else I will get High Blood pressure.....

really feel sorry for you. Don't think you can change his attitude unless joke with him that the PM is now very interested in his works. It may or may not work, but at least you can say you already try.
From what you posted, I guess he does not have any motivation to work in his company. To make things worsen, he does not know that he is making a lot of troubles to his team mates.
Hmm.I dont think he has no motivation to work in his company...coz he very happy when he talk about his company..but rather I find that he does not take pride in the work he does....
i think he needs a holiday. he's prolly been too stagnant and getting too comfortable in the job. ever considered sharing this with ur PM when things eventually got way out of hand?
